Sainsbury Exit Crowded Online DVD Rental Market

Author: Peter Bell

Online DVD Rental is fast becoming the new way to get your DVDs for home viewing. Its convenience, price and simplicity make it hard to beat. Despite the compelling proposition offered by online DVD rental and increasing consumer adoption Sainsbury have announced that it is to exit the online rental market.

Sainsbury announced that it is to pull out of the popular online DVD rental market saying that it didnt match their online strategy. UK DVD Rental Guide believes this dynamic is inevitable in a busy competitive market such as online DVD rental. What is a shame is that it leaves Tesco as the only other supermarket playing in this market and in particular is the only other provider at the 7.97 per month price point. Competition is necessary to ensure consumers receive the best possible service at the most competitive price point.

The main players in the UK market are ScreenSelect, LOVEFiLM, Blockbuster, Tesco, Easy DVD and Blockbuster. Of course not all these companies physically provide the services. Video Island power the rental services of ScreenSelect, MSN DVD Rental, easyCinema, Tesco DVD Rental, itv Movieclub and brafilm. There are many other players but these represent the bulk of the service providers. The market is huge. C. 90% of homes have a DVD player and with internet penetration growing rapidly more and more people may choose to rent a DVD online.

Given the large number of players in the market, this move is not likely to make any material impact and this will not be the last exit we see as competition hots up for a share of this huge market.

UK DVD Rental guide provides independent reviews, comparisons and rankings of the major UK providers of online DVD rental services. Continuous testing and seeking consumer feedback will ensure the guide is comprehensive, up to date and continues to ensure it provides independent advice.
